UV wood coatings represent one of the earliest industrialized UV-curable coatings. In 1968, Bayer pioneered the first generation of UV-curable wood coatings in Germany, marking the beginning of industrial UV curing. These coatings have a primary application in painting wooden and bamboo floors, decorative panels, and furniture. Categorized into fillers, primers, and topcoats, these coatings are primarily applied through rolling, with some irregular-shaped wooden items using spray coating. UV coating significantly improves wear resistance, scratch resistance, and impact resistance.
1. Wood Primer:
Wood primers boast low toxicity, excellent stability, high adhesion, good flatness, and easy sanding. Transparent fillers are particularly useful for filling pores and smoothing rough wood surfaces, reducing paint wastage, and providing a smooth surface for coarse-grained boards. Primers are used on smoother surfaces. After applying a primer layer, it permeates the wood's pores with its low viscosity, enhancing the natural beauty of the wood through the refractive effect of the film layer. Following UV curing and mechanical sanding, UV-cured wood topcoat delivers a smooth, glossy, and full finish.
2. Wood Topcoat:
Wood topcoats exhibit low toxicity, excellent stability, high adhesion, and good flatness. Their main purpose is to decorate and protect the wood surface, which is available in glossy and matte finishes. After UV curing, the topcoat significantly improves wear, scratch, and impact resistance while enhancing the decorative effect.
